Piedmont built Italy’s first steam ship “The Sicilia” in Genoa in 1855. Italy’s first home built steam locomotives were built in the same year.

The tunnel through Mount Cenis was being built from 1857, making a crossing through the Alps. This too was financed by a number of Parisian based bankers including Rothschild and Laffitte.
