What is PID (pelvic inflammatory disease)?
A
A general term for the infection of the upper genital tract :
- Uterus
- Fallopian tubes
- Ovaries
- Cervix
- Endometrium

What normally causes PID?
A
Ascending infection from the cervix, usually an STI (chlamydia/gonorrhoea)

Risk factors for PID?
A
Risk of getting an STI generally:
- Young age
- New sexual partner
- Lack of protection
- Lots of partners
- Lower SES
- (prev. infection)
Recent IUCD (IUD/S) insertion
Termination of pregnancy

PID presentation?
A
Symptoms:
- Bilateral lower abdo pain
- Deep dyspareunia
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Vaginal/cervical purulent discharge
Signs:
- lower abdominal tenderness
- Purulent discharge
- > 38 temp

Investigations in PID workup?
A
- Pregnancy test for exclusion
- Cervical chlamydial/gonorrhoea swabs
- ESR/CRP
- U/S scan
- Urinanalysis/microscopy

One of the major risks associated with PID?
A
tubo-ovarian abscesses, if ruptured then these can be serious (mortality 5-10%)

Long term consequences of PID?
A
Infertility (10-15% with a single episode)
Chronic PID (due to inflammation)
Ectopic pregnancy
