Pictures from Class Flashcards
Describe what is happening.
This is SERRATIUS MARCESSENS and the red pigment is PERDIGIOSIN. That is the normal metabolic pathway. The white colonies are a result of UV light and a disruption in this pathway. There are more colonies on the light plate because of PHOTOREACTIVATION.
Which organism is positive for chemotaxis?
Bascillus subtilus is (+) for chemotaxis.
Describe this.
The E. Coli is most succeptable to UV light. The Bascillus subtilus 24hr culture is more resistant because of endospores. The 7day culture is the most resistant because it has more endopores than thr 24hr culture.
Describe this.
The plate on the right is STARCH AGAR. Add Gram’s Iodine and the microbes that are (+) for starch hydrolysis have a clear zone around the growth.
The plate on the left is GELATIN AGAR. Organisms with a clear zone around the growth are positive for gelatin hydrolysis.
Motility.
The organism on the left is motile. This was done by a motility stab. You can tell becuase the microbe has grown out from the original stab.
Thioglycollate broth
The organism on the LEFT is an OBLIGATE AEROBE. You can tell because all the growth is at the top (pellicle).
The organism on the RIGHT is an OBLIGATE ANAEROBE. You can tell because the growth is at the bottom, away from the oxygen (sediment).
Vogues-Proskauer Test Results
The VP(+) is red after 60min.
The VP(-) does not change color.
Oxidative/Fermentive Results
Oxidative:
without oil = yellow on the top
with oil = green throughout
Fermentive:
yellow in both
Neither:
without oil: blue
with oil = green
Pseudosel Result
Pseudosel (+) has green and yellow.
green = pyocyanin
yellow = flourescine
Selective for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Urease, Cuitrate, and Phenylalanine Deaminase Test Results
Urease:
(+) pink
(-) yellowish
Citrate:
(+) blue
(-) green
Phenylalanine Demainase:
(+) blue ring around top
(-) none
Nitrate Reductase Results
Nitrite (+) = blue
N2 (+) = bubbles in durham tube
(-) nothing
Kligler’s Iron Agar Results
LACTOSE (+) = YELLOW SLANT; (-) RED SLANT
GLUCOSE (+) YELLOW BUTT; (-) RED BUTT
H2S (+) BLACK BUTT
Carbyhydrate Fermention
(+) CARB FERMENTION = YELLOW
(-) CARB FERMENTION = PURPLE
GAS (+) = GAS IN TUBE
What is this?
Gram Positive Cocci
What is this?
Endospore Stain
ENDOSPORES = GREEN
VEGETATIVE CELLS = REDISH
