Q

interconnected, branching strands of basaloid cells embedded by a loose, richly vascularised fibrous stroma, extending from the epidermis down into the dermis

Q
A

Clear cell acanthoma

  • Discrete acanthoma with overlying parakeratosis
  • Distinct transition between the normal epidermis and the clearer/paler cells in the stratum
    spinosum
  • Peppered with neutrophils

The cells of the acanthoma are deficient in
phosphorylase, resulting in an accumulation of glycogen.

17
Q
A

Large cell acanthoma

The cells composing the acanthoma have large nuclei, typically twice the size of the nuclei in the surrounding epidermis.

May be pigmented

19
Q
A

Acantholytic acanthoma

21
Q
A

Pilar cyst

Abrupt keratinization without a granular layer
* Deeply eosinophilic dense keratin
* Focal calcification of contents common
* Typically on scalp
* Often multiple
