What is the poem about
The poet is listening to a women singing and it triggers a memory of the poets mother who used to play on the piano. The poet tries to stay present but the memory is too strong and he is pulled back into the past. He is left crying for his dead mother.
What does the imagery of a vista suggest
It implies that the music takes him back to a distant past of his childhood.
What does the sibilance spite my self suggest
It becomes harsher which implies how he doesn’t want to remember the past. Together with the adjective insidious which implies the memory is harmful and upsetting.
What does the poet use rhyming couplets
They are often found in love poetry which reflects his love for his mother as a child
