Piaget Stages Of Cognitive Development Flashcards
Sensorimotor?
0-2 years
Learn about their environment and develop schemas by using their senses.
Also egocentric
pre-operational?
3-7 years
Child begins to control their environment by using symbolic behaviour including drawings and pretend play.
Not able to think logically
Also egocentric
Concrete operational?
7-11 years
Children use practical resources to develop a better understanding of the world. For example: counters in maths.
They classify, categorise and use logic to understand things they see.
Formal operational?
11 years up to 18
Have the capacity for abstract thought, rational thought and problem solving.
Conservation experiment
Refers to the child’s understanding that the amount remains the same even when the containers shape has changed. Piaget also used tests using solids, and number.
What did the conservation experiment show for under 7 year olds
They cannot conserve because they cannot think about more than one aspect of a situation at one time
What did the conservation experiment show for the operational stage?
By this stage, children can think logically so can understand that the quantity of water stays the same when poured into a differently shaped container.
What is egocentrism?
Piaget believed that until children are 7 years old, they only see things from their own perspective. This is linked to the three mountains experiment.
Three mountains experiment
Can only imagine what’s on their side of the mountain, not able to imagine anything different on the other side.
Piaget and play
Children need free and spontaneous play to explore new experiences
They need access to different materials.
Symbolic play- using a calculator as a phone
