Piaget schematic development theory Flashcards
what is a schema?
part of the cognitive development theory was the notion that children go through a series of intellectual development, known as schemas. a category of knowledge as well as the process of acquiring knowledge
an example of a schema?
A child sees a pony. If an adult explains to a child that the animal is actually a very small type of horse, the child must at this time modify her existing schema for horses.
the child sees a horse with four legs, hair and a tail. when they encounter a cow for the first time, they will have to adapt their schema to allow it to fit in.
- assimilation
understanding a new concept (schema)
- equilibrium
the past experiences fits in with the schema
dis-equilibrium
a new experience disturbs the child’s schema
accomodation
the child’s understanding changes to take into account of the new idea
