PIAGET’S THEORY OF COGNITIVE Flashcards
ASSIMILATION
is how humans perceive and adapt to new information. It is the process of fitting new information into pre-existing cognitive schemas
(est la façon dont les humains perçoivent et s’adaptent aux nouvelles informations. C’est le processus d’ajustement de nouvelles informations dans les schémas cognitifs préexistants)
ACCOMODATION
is the process of taking new information in one’s environment and altering pre-existing schemas in order to fit in the new information. This happens when the existing schemas (knowledge) does not work and need to be changed to deal with a new situation
4 STAGES
A. Sensoriomotor stage (0 to 2 years old)
B. Pre-operational stage (2 to 7 years old)
C. Concrete operational stage (7 to 12 years old)
D. Formal operational stage (since 12 years old)
- A. SENSORIOMOTOR stage def(0 to 2 years old) ;
- Object permanence theory.
- Infants progressively construct knowledge and understanding of the world by coordinating experiences with physical interaction with objects.
- OPT : is a child’s understanding that the object continue to exist even though he/she cannot see or hear them.
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 0-6 weeks
Simple reflexes:
coordination of sensation and action through reflexive behaviours (sucking of objects in the mouth, following interesting objects with the eyes or
closing of the hand when an object makes contact with the palm)
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 6W - 4 M
First habits and primary circular reactions phase: Coordination of sensation and two types of schemas:
- Habits (reflex)
- Primary circular reaction (reproduction of an event
that initially occurred by chance)
ex: satisfaction of open and close the hand
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 4M - 8M
Secondary circular reactions phase:
The infant become more object-oriented, moving beyond self-preoccupation; repeat actions that bring interesting or pleasurable results.
This stage is associated primarily with the development of coordination between vision and prehension.
3 new abilities:
- Intentional grasping
- Secondary cirucular reactions
- Differentiations between ends and means
(If the child wants and object but this disappear, he will not look for it.)
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 8M - 12M
Coordination of secondary circular reactions stages:
- Coordination of vision and touch - Coordination of schemas and intentionality - Beginning of goal orientation (The child will try to find the object if he has seen it being hide )
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 12M - 18M
Tertiary circular reactions, novelty and curiosity:
-Associated with the discovery of new means to meet
goals
- The infants become intrigued by the many properties
of the objects
(The child understand spatial displacement)
SENSORIOMOTOR STAGE : 18M - 2Y
Internalization of schemas:
This stage is associated primarily with the beginnings of
insight or true creativity
The infants develop the ability to use primitive symbols
and form enduring mental representation
The child will look for objects which he hasn’t seen it
being hide
