Piaget Flashcards
What is a schema?
pattern linking learning ideas and actions to make sense of the world.
How does a child reach a state of equilibrium?
when a child’s experience matches what they understand
How do children recognise when schema’s are inaccurate?
through accommodation and assimilation.
What is assimilation
when new knowledge is added to the schema to help understand it.
What is accommodation?
when schema’s get altered and then new ones are formed as a result of new information or experiences
What is Conservation?
something has the same quantity even if it changes
What is egocentricism?
a child is unable to view something from anothers perspective
Children can go from being egocentric to…
… being able to understand others may hold different views or opinions
What are the criticisms of the schema theory?
- development doesnt always follow a smooth/predictable path
- observations were based on a small number of children
What was the sensori-motor stage and what was the age range?
0-2 yrs
- understanding of self and reality & how things work through the environment.
- can differentiate self and objects
- learn through schema
What was the pre-operational stage and what was the age range?
2-4
- child cannot think abstractly and needs concrete physical situations
- objects classified in simple ways
What was the concrete operational stage and what was the age range?
7-10
- accomodation is increased
- can start thinking abstractly
- creates logical structures explaining experiences (physical)
What is the formal operational stage and what was the age range?
11-15 +
- cognition reaches final form
- no longer requires concrete objects to make rational judgements
- can be hypothetical
- almost fully formed abstract thinking
What are the criticisms of the cognitive development theory?
- kids are less egocentric than he said
- stages could be more fluid
- no substantial evidence
- based on small number of children
- under/over estimated a childs cognitive abilities
- abstract thinking takes 11+ years
