Piaget Flashcards
What did piaget outline?
Piaget outlined the four stages of cognitive development and gave approximate ages at which children reached those stages.
List the four stages of cognitive development
1) Sensorimotor(birth-2 years)
2) Preoperational(2-7 years)
3) Concrete operational (7-11)
4) Formal operational(11-18)
What is the sensorimotor stage?
Sensorimotor skills is when infants use there sense for example taste, touch, sight etc to interact with the world.
What is the pre-operational stage?
Children use symbols to represent earlier sensorimotor discoveries. Development of language and make believe play takes place. Piaget believed that children cannot properly understand mass and volume really work
what is the Concrete operational?
Children’s reasonings become more logical providing the issues are concrete in concrete operational stage.
What is formal operational stage ?
This is stage where young people can also think of possible outcomes of scientific reasons. They also gain abstract thinking
What is abstract thinking?
The ability to save problems using the imagination without having to use practice skills. This form of advanced thinking.
What is egocentric thinking?
Not being able to see a situation from another persons point of view. Piaget believed that children thought others thought felt and heard the same as them.
What is the Concrete logical thinking?
The ability to solve problems, providing they can see or physically handle the issues.
