Physiology of Thirst and Fluid Balance Flashcards
1
Q
Why is it important for water balance to be regulated?
A
So that plasma osmolality stays constant
2
Q
What can effect plasma osmolality?
A
- ADH
- Kidneys
- Thirst (stimulates fluid intake)
3
Q
What are osmoreceptors?
A
Group of specialised cells in the anterior wall of the third ventricle that detect changes in osmolality (mainly Na+)
Fenestrations in the blood-brain barrier allow circulating solutes to influence them.
4
Q
Where in the brain does thirst get registered?
A
Cerebral cortex
