Q

Stimulation of the sensory olfactory Receptors

A

Gaseous odorant particles bind to
G-protein coupled receptors on
dendrites of olfactory sensory
neurons
• This binding stimulates cAMP or
IP3 production and opens ionic
channels
• Influx of both Na+ and Ca++ with
efflux of Cl- causes depolarisation
of the olfactory neurons followed
by action potential travelling in
their olfactory nerve axons
