Anatomy Pharynx Flashcards
Nerve supply to pharynx
Motor:
❑Pharyngeal plexus (cranial accessory through vagus) except
stylopharyngeus (glossopharyngeal).
Sensory:
❑Nasopharynx → mainly by the maxillary nerve (pharyngeal branch of sphenopalatine ganglion)
❑Oropharynx → mainly by the glossopharyngeal nerve
❑Laryngopharynx → by the internal laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve
Main blood supply of palatine tonsils
Tonsillar branch of facial artery: It pierces superior constrictor muscle of pharynx
Venous drainage of palatine tomsills and risks associated with it
one or more veins traverse the superior constrictor muscle to join the Paratonsillar,
pharyngeal or facial veins.
Risk: severe hge. During tonsillectomy due to injury of paratonsillar vein
What is killian triangle and what is its related clinical application
is a triangular area in the wall of the pharynx between
the Cricopharyngeus and Thyropharyngeus which are
the two parts of the inferior constrictors.
Clinical app: zinker Diverticulum
Blood supply of pharynx
- Ascending pharyngeal artery: From external carotid artery.
- Pharyngeal branch of maxillary artery.
- Ascending palatine branch of facial artery.
