physiology of integumentary system Flashcards
protection
-protects deeper tissue from mechanical damage, bacterial damage, and UV radiation
-prevent desiccation (drying out)
sensation
pressure, temp, pain, touch, and movement of hairs
temp regulation
-regulated by changes in volume of blood vessels in dermis
blood vessels dilate: blood flows from deeper organs to skin resulting in heat loss increase
blood vessels constrict: less blood flows to skin resulting in heat loss decrease
vitamin D production
aka Calcitriol: hormone involved in regualtion of calcium homeostasis
-calcium needed for bone metabolism, nerve and muscle function, and clotting
when exposed to UV light: 7-dehydrocholesterol→cholecalciferol→
blood→liver/kidneys→calcitriol (active vitamin D3)
excretion
removal of waste products
-sweat: water, salt, urea, ammonia, uric acid
