Physiological stress Flashcards
Typical clinical presentation
acute onset pain in right iliac fossa nausea, vomiting, fever rebound tenderness at McBurney's point guarding positive Rovsing's sign
what is the typical physiological response to appendicitis
increased glucagon secretion
What are the physiological responses to stress
increased glucose secretion, increased oxygen, increased sympathetic activity
What is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis role during stress
increased production of CRH which stimulates production of ACTH, which in turn stimulates production of cortisol.
What is the role of cortisol in stress
Cortisol has an important role in the stress response of releasing glucose from fat storage. So, the ACTH level would be increased, not reduced.
During physiological stress, what happens to T4 levels?
DROPS
What is T4 a modulator of
metabolic rate
What are the features of the acute phase response to injury
Reduction of transport proteins (albumin, transferrin)
Pyrexia
Hepatic sequestration cations
Increased serum amyloid A
