Physiological fluids Flashcards
Examples of physiological fluids
Intracellular and extracellular fluid
Molar solution
Molecular weight of a substance in grams dissolved in 1 litre of water (1M)
Millimolar solution
Molecular weight of a substance in milligrams dissolved in 1 litre of water (1mM)
Extracellular fluid
Weak solutions of common salts in water (sodium chloride)
Intracellular fluid
Weak solutions of potassium chloride in water
Composition of water in the body
67% in cells
26% in tissue fluid
7% in blood plasma
Movement across capillary walls
Cell membrane is semi-permeable so water can move between compartments via osmosis. It also allows cations and anions to move through however proteins cannot.
Fluid maintenance
Water enters the body via the gut which is transferred to the plasma and sent around the body
