Physiological determinants of running performance Flashcards
define exercise economy
the energy required to maintain a constant velocity of movement. the ability to transfer energy into movement
give an example of exercise economy
if 2 people running at the same speed, one of them could be using less energy than the other because they are more economic
define anaerobic capacity
the amount of energy obtained from anaerobic sources (PC breakdown and anaerobic glycolysis) in a single bout of exercise
give an example of anaerobic capacity
an athlete completing a 100m sprint will use up their anaerobic stores as there is only a limited amount so has to slow down
when can anaerobic energy stores be partially replenished
during rest intervals or low-intensity periods of a match/race
define submaximal aerobic fitness
the ability to maintain a high percentage of VO2 max for a prolonged period of time
give an example of where submaximal aerobic fitness is essential
long distance running
define maximum speed
time taken to move a body (part or whole) through a movement over a pre-determined distance or speed
what is the equation for speed
distance/time
what determines an athletes maximum speed
the rate of ATP production, fast twitch muscle fibre recruitment and force production
define maximal aerobic fitness (VO2 max)
the maximum volume of oxygen that can be utilised in 1 minute, the upper limit of the aerobic system
define anaerobic power
the rate at which energy is produced, which is the fastest rate at which energy (ATP) can be produced anaerobically during activity
give an example of anaerobic power
if 2 athletes are equal in terms of movement economy then the athlete with the greatest anaerobic power will be the fastest
