Physiological changes in pregnancy Flashcards
1
Q
Plasma volume
A
- Increase by 10 - 15 %
- Expands rapidly until 30 -34 weeks
- Excess weight gain due to oedema
2
Q
Red cell volume
A
- Increase by 20%
2. Haemodilution/Physiological anaemia - Discrepancy between the increase in plasma volume and red blood cell mass
3
Q
Platelets
A
Slight decrease during pregnancy
4
Q
Clotting factors
A
- Pregnancy is a hypercoaguable state
2. Increase in clotting factors especially fibrinogen
5
Q
Cardiac output
A
- 5 litres to 6.5 l
2. increase in stroke volume by 10% and pulse rate
6
Q
Blood pressure
A
- Drop in peripheral resistance by 50% due to increase in production of vasodilator prostaglandins
- Diastolic BP drops by mid pregnancy by 10-20 mmHh and increases to non pregnant levels by term
7
Q
Supine hypotension syndrome
A
- Lying supine can compress IVC
2. Reduces venous return and cardiac output
8
Q
Respiratory rate changes in pregnancy
A
- Breathlessness more common as maternal partial pressure of CO2 is set lower to allow fetus to offload
9
Q
Tidal volume
A
Increases by 40% due to effect of progesterone
Breathe more deeply but not mor e frequently
10
Q
Skin
A
- Linear nigra
- Palmar Erythema
- Spide Naevi
11
Q
Effect of pregnancy on the Thyroid
A
- Enlarges due to increased demand
- Increased iodine clearance by kidneys leads to iodide deficiency
- Increase in TBG, T3 and T4
