Physiological Aids Flashcards
What do physiological aids do?
To speed up the rate of adaptation of the body. Physiological aids are legal apart from blood doping
What is homologous blood doping?
Athletes inject themselves with another athlete’s blood
What is autologous blood doping?
Athlete takes their own blood, freezes it whilst waiting for their own blood to replenish and then re-injects it back into themselves
What are the advantages of blood doping?
- Increased red blood cell and haemoglobin count
- Increased oxygen carrying capacity
What are the drawbacks of blood doping?
- Increased blood viscosity
- Risk of infections
What is IHT?
Altitude training at high intensity, above sea level at low-levels of oxygen
What are the benefits of IHT?
- Stimulates production of red blood cells
- Delays fatigue
What are the drawbacks of IHT?
- Benefits lost quickly
- Dehydration
What are the cooling aids available?
- Ice vests
- Ice packs
- Ice baths
What are ice vests?
Used before performance during warm-up to reduce dehydration
What are ice packs?
Applied to injury and reduces blood flow to injured area and reduces injury
What are ice baths?
Removes waste products post-performance as vessels vasoconstriction and then vasodilate
What are the drawbacks of cooling aids?
- Ice burns and pains
- Hide or complicate injuries
