Physics Y08 Spr1 Flashcards
1.1 What is work?
Mechanical transfer of energy when a force moves a distance
1.2 What are the units of work?
J (Joules)
1.3 What equation links work, force and distance?
Work = Force x Distance
1.4 What is a lever?
A force multiplier - a small input force produces a large output force
1.5 How is the turning effect (moment) of a force calculated?
Moment = Force x Distance
1.6 What are the units of moments?
Nm (Newton-metres, they do not have their own units)
1.7 How does number of pulleys used affect force needed to move object?
When more pulleys are used, less force is required
1.8 How does distance moved by force vary with number of pulleys used?
When more pulleys are used, the smaller force has to move further
1.9 How do gears work?
A small cog rotates and moves a large cog (or the other way around)
1.1 Why are gears useful?
They act as a force multiplier (a smaller force enables a larger force)
1.1 What makes a good conductor?
A material that allows thermal energy to move quickly through it
1.2 What makes a good insulator?
A material that only allows thermal energy to move slowly through it
1.3 What is thermal energy?
The quantity of energy stored due to vibration of particles
1.4 How are internal energy, thermal energy and heat all linked?
They are all the same
1.5 How is temperature difference linked to energy transfers?
Temperature difference enables thermal transfer through materials
