Physics-Using energy Flashcards
What is a renewable energy source
An energy source which can be replenished as it is being used up
Examples of renewable energy resources
Wind
Hydro-electricity
Tidal energy
Solar energy
Example of a non-renewable energy resource
Fossil fuels
Advantages of generating power with gas rather than coal
Flexible generation: Gas power stations have short start up times so can be switched on/off more quickly
Lower emissions of carbon dioxide
Two disadvantages of using renewable energy resources to generate power
Output is often determined by external factors (eg. wind speed) so supply is uncertain
Renewable fuels often produce less energy per kg making them more expensive
What are the environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels
Carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect
Sulphur Dioxide leads to acid rain
Three advantages of nuclear power
Large amounts of energy per kg
No greenhouse gases released
Low fuel costs
Three disadvantages of nuclear power
Produces nuclear waste-harmful to humans
Non-renewable
Risk of nuclear accidents
Social factors to consider in energy production
visual pollution
sound pollution
