Physics Test (29/07/21) Flashcards
Define Force & what is force measured in?
Force is strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement and is measured in Newtons.
Define Weight
Weight is a body’s relative mass; the heaviness of a person or thing.
Define Mass
Mass is a large body of matter with no definite shape.
Define Density
Density is the degree of compactness of a substance.
What are the values for FMA?
Force, Mass, and Acceleration
What are the values for VDT?
Speed, Distance, and Time
What are the values for AVT?
Acceleration, Speed, and Time
Define Friction
Friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
What is Newtons First Law?
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
What is Newtons Second Law?
acceleration (gaining speed) happens when a force acts on a mass (object). The greater the mass of the object being accelerated, the greater the amount of force to accelerate the object.
What is the difference between weight and mass?
The difference between mass and weight is that mass is the amount of matter in an object, whereas weight is the force exerted on an object by gravity.
What is the relationship between density and buoyancy?
The relationship between density and buoyancy is that if an objects average density is less than the surrounding fluid, it will become buoyant.
What is the relationship between surface type and friction?
The relationship between surface type and friction is that rougher surfaces have more friction between them, and smoother surfaces have less. Heavier objects also have more friction because they press together with greater force.
What are some ways that friction can be reduced?
Way friction can be reduced is making the surface smoother, using lubrication is one way. Reducing the forces acting on the surfaces, and reducing the contact between the surfaces.
An example of Newtons First Law of Motion
if a soccer ball was at rest it would stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, in this case, it could be afoot kicking it.
An example of Newtons Second Law of Motion
if you were to push a car and a truck with the same amount of force, the car would go farther as it has less mass than the truck.
How do you measure density?
To measure the density of an object you divide the mass (w x 9.8ms-2) of the object by its volume (l x w x h).
What happens when a force acts on an object?
A force acting on an object causes the object to change its shape or size, to start or stop moving, or to accelerate or decelerate.
What happens if an unbalanced or balanced force acts on an object?
If an unbalanced force acts on an object, it will result in the objects motion changing (speed up or slow down). If a balanced force is applied with equal strength but acts in opposite directions, the object will not move.
What happens to an object at terminal velocity?
At terminal velocity, the weight of the object due to gravity is balanced by the frictional forces, and the resultant force is zero.
What is the effect of friction on a moving object?
The effect of friction on a moving object is that if there is more friction it causes the moving object to lose more energy and slow down faster.
