Q

What are some ideas about the Universe?

A

Some people thought that the Sun was eaten by monsters during a solar eclipse.
Thousands of years ago there were people who thought that a flat Earth was supported by pillars, or surrounded by oceans.

Q

What is an observation that could not be explained by the geocentric model?

A

Sometimes the planets appeared to go backwards. This is called retrograde motion. You do not notice it during one night, but if you make observations over several months you can see that the paths of the planets change direction.

Q

What are some similarities between the geocentric model and the helio centric model?

A
  • Both rotate around one celestial body
    • Both used to try to show what orbits what in the universe
    • both models of the solar system

Q

What are some differences between the geocentric model and the helio centric model?

A

Geocentric-everything revolves around the earth
• heliocentric - everything revolves around the sun
• the heliocentric model were ellipses not circular orbits

Q

Explain the importance of evidence in developing the heliocentric model.

A

Not everything made sense with the Geocentric model which meant that a new model was needed that could explain everything simply. The moons of Jupiter were evidence that not everything was in orbit around the Earth.

Q

Whay could atoms not be formed immediately after the big bang?

A

The universe was both too hot and too dense for elements to form. Hydrogen didn’t appear until the universe had spread out — and subsequently cooled — enough for the first protons and neutrons, and later simple atoms, to form.

Q

What is evidence to support the Big Bang Theory?

A

The solar systems are slowly moving away from each other so they would have once been something smaller than an atom.
