Q

What is a catalyst?

A

A catalyst is a substance that can increase the rate of reaction without being used up itself.
They provide an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy meaning that more particles will have sufficient energy to overcome the energy barrier and react.

Q

How do you do the following things?
- Increase the particle speed
- Make there be more particles present
- Particles with more energy
- Lower activation energy

A

Increase the particle speed - higher temperature Make there be more particles present - higher concentration
Particles with more energy - higher temperature
Lower activation energy - use a catalyst

Q

How does changing the surface area affect the rate of reaction?

A

The higher the surface area the faster the rate of reaction. Because with higher surface area it is easier to hit more particles.

Q

How does temperature affect the rate of reaction.

A

The higher the temperature the quicker the reaction because the particles will have more energy so they will collide with each other more and therefore react quicker.
