21
Q

What is the atomic number

A

The number of protons therefore also the number of neutrons

22
Q

How to work out the amount of neutrons

A

Mass number-atomic number

23
Q

What is the charge of an atom

A

They have no overall charge

24
Q

What is an ion

A

An atom that has lost or gained an electron

25
Q

What is an isotope

A

An element that has a duplicate but with a different mass number

26
Q

What did Thompson discover about the atom

A

That it has electrons

He created a plum pudding model which was a positive sphere with negative bits dotted through

27
Q

What did Rutherford discover about the atom

A

Discovered the plum pudding had a solid positive centre =the nucleus

28
Q

What did Chadwick discover about the atom

A

They had neutrons

29
Q

How did Rutherford test the plum pudding model

A

He did a test with alpha particles and gold foil
Some alpha particles were shot into it
Most went straight through but some bounced back
This leaf Rutherford to conclude that there is something solid in the middle of an atom, the NUCLEUS

30
Q

Advantages of renewable energy

A

Doesn’t usually release harmful co2

Infinite

31
Q

Disadvantages of renewable

A

Solar power can’t occur during the day
Expensive
Some rely on specific weather conditions
Tidal and wave power can disrupt local wildlife

32
Q

Advantages of fossil fuels

A

Very readily available
Cheaper
Coal power stations have a very short start up time

33
Q

Disadvantages of fossil fuels

A

Coal, oil and gas take millions of years to form
Very heavily polluting
Nuclear radioactive waster has to be stored

34
Q

What is charge

A

Charge = value for electricity flowing in a circuit

35
Q

Current

A

Flow of electrons

36
Q

Potential difference

A

Pushes current around

37
Q

Resistance

A

Slows current

38
Q

Equation for charge

A

Charge= current x time

39

A

Coulombs

40
Q

Equation for potential difference

A

Current x resistance

41
Q

A

Volts

42
Q

What does a thermistor do

A

Only lets current flow at certain temperatures

Uses central heating

43
Q

What do light dependant resistors do

A

Used in street lights and security lights

44
Q

What is wasted energy

A

Any energy that comes out of a situation but isn’t intended to be there

45
Q

What’s an example of wasted energy

A

Electrical
Becomes light which is useful
Heat and sound is released as wasted energy

46
Q

What is the law of conservation of energy

A

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed into another type of energy

47
