Q

explain partition coefficient?

A

The other major factor determining anesthetic gas uptake is solubility. Solubility is described in terms of partition coefficients for various tissues. A partition coefficient is a ratio of dissolved gas, by volume, in two tissue compartments at equilibrium. For example, a fat:blood coefficient describes the volume of gas in fat and in blood when the gas is in equilibrium between these two substances. A high partition coefficient means that it will take longer to equilibrate between two substances because a larger volume is required to achieve equilibrium.
