Physics: Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
what is the motor effect
conductor and the magnet exert a force on each other causing the wire to move
what is the motor effect force equation
F (force) = B (magnetic flux density) x l (current) x 1 (length)
what is the Fleming left hand rule
left hand index finger is direction of the magnetic field
left hand second finger is perpendicular and the current
left hand thumb point in direction of force
what is the generator effect
induction of a potential difference (and current if there’s a complete circuit) in a wire which is moving relative to a magnetic field, or experiencing a change in magnetic field
what happens if you change the magnet in the generator affect
induce and alternating current
what do alternators do
generate alternating current by spinning the magnet
what do dynamos do
generate direct current by spinning the wire
what do transformers do
change the potential difference for alternating current
what is the potential difference transformer equation
Vp (input potential difference) / Vs (Output potential difference) = np (number of primary coils) / ns (number of turns on secondary coil)
what is the current transformer equation
Vs (Pd across secondary coil) x is (Current through secondary coil) = Vp (Pd across primary coil) x Ip (Current through primary coil
