Physics: Light - Quiz 1 Flashcards
What is light?
💡a form of pure energy 💡has no mass 💡travels very fast (300,000km/s 💡travels in STRAIGHT lines 💡made up of electromagnetic waves 💡electrons in atoms can be excited to and jump to higher energy levels
what is the convection, conductions, and radiation for medium?
convection - liquids + gases
conduction - solids
radiation - no medium required
what are some examples of mediums?
convection - ocean currents - air currents conduction - electric stove - element radiation - light travelling through vacuum of outer space
what are electromagnetic waves?
⤳ a wave with electrical and magnetic parts
⤳this type of wave does not require a medium
⤳travels at the speed of light (300,000 km/s)
⤳together they form a chain
what is a medium?
any physical substance (air, water, dust) that acts as a carrier for the transmission of energy (example: sound travels through air particles)
what is visible light?
🔆 electromagnetic waves that the human eye can detect
🔆 visible light is just a small portion of the full electromagnetic spectrum
what are the wavelengths of light visible to the human eye?
700nm - 400nm
what happens when light strikes matter?
the light is either absorbed, transmitted, or reflected
