Physics- Forces Flashcards
What do we measure forces in?
What can forces change?
- Newtons
2. The way things move
What is the turning effect of a force called?
Moment. The moment depends on the force being applied and how far it is from the pivot.
What does deformation mean?
When forces can change shape of objects
What does compression mean?
When forces squash an object this causes compression.
What is tension?
When they stretch an object, they cause tension.
What is reaction?
An equal and opposite force exerted by a body against a force acting upon it.
What is extension?
The amount that they stretch is called the extension.
What is elastic limit?
At some point the spring will not go back to its original length when you remove the force.
What’s hooke’s law?
If the extension doubles when you double the force then the object obeys hooke’s law
What’s linear relationship?
when the data is plotted (y versus x) the result is a straight line
What are the objects in the universe that gives out their own light?
Stars and the sun
What are the objects in the universe that reflects light from stars?
The planets that orbit the sun. The star closest to the sun is called Proxima Centauri.
Fill in the gaps.
A solar system include a star, it’s planets and their moons. A galaxy is ______ of_____ grouped together, which forms a galaxy. The closest galaxy to the Milky Way is the _______ galaxy.
- Billions
- Stars
- Andromeda
During a new moon what do you see?
The side of the Moon in shadow.
What is the name of the model of the universe with the earth at the centre?
The heliocentric model
