Biology-Cells Flashcards
What is a cell membrane?
A barrier around the cell. This controls what comes in and out of a cell.
What is a nucleus?
Controls the cells activities
What is a cytoplasm?
Where chemical reactions happen.
What is the meaning of Mitochondria?
Tiny parts of cells floating in the cytoplasm where energy is released from glucose from food. This mitochondria, found in the cell cytoplasm, are where most respiration happens.
What is a cell wall?
Strengthens the cell and provides support.
What is a vacuole?
(Normally permanent) contains a watery liquid called a cell sap.
What is fibres?
The wall that contains a very thick layer of lignin and they occur in many parts of the plant, wherever strength is needed.
What is parenchyma cells?
These cells contain living clyptoplasm.
What is a red and white cell?
Red cell- one kind of plasma (a watery liquid).
White cell- another kind of plasma, which too has a watery liquid.
What are root hair cells?
They are in front of plants. They are adapted to have a large area to absorb as much water as possible.
What are red blood cells apart of and what are they important for?
They are part of you blood. They have no nucleus and can be squashed so they can pass easily through small blood vessels. They are important for respiration.
What’s diffusion?
Movement of a substance from and area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What does Mrs gren stand for?
M- movement- you can run
R- respiration- you can get energy from food
S- sensitivity- you could be sensitive to light.
G- growth- you grow from baby to teenager to adult
R- reproduction- when babies are born
E- excretion- when you drink
N- nutrition- foods can be nutritious
What are amoeba used for and why isn’t it a plant cell? Why is euglena not a plant cell?
Amoeba is used for food ingestion, locomotion and buoyancy.
Amoeba is not an animal cell because it is a single cell.
Euglena is not a plant cell because it’s a single cell.
What are tracheid?
One kind of xylem cell.
What are bordered pits?
Water passes from one tracheid to another through bordered pits.
