Physics - Electromagnetic spectrum Flashcards
List out the electromagnetic spectrum in order
Radio waves
Microwaves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultraviolet
x-rays
Gamma rays
What can we say about the spectrum?
shorter wavelength = higher frequency.
The energy of waves increases as frequency increases.
What are the uses of radio waves?
To carry radio, TV, and phone signals
To connect to other devices
What are the dangers of Radio Waves?
waves can penetrate the body and heat the internal parts.
What are the uses of microwaves?
Communications in satellites as microwaves can pass through the atmosphere and reach satellites above the earth.
What are the uses of Infrared radiation?
Transmission of signals in remote controls and video equipment.
Infrared scanners used in medicine to determine health of tissue
Infrared cameras provide night vision
What are the dangers of infrared radiation?
The skin absorbs it, so it can kill cells and cause cancer
What are the dangers of UV radiation?
It damages the eyes and can cause blindness.
UV rays from the sun can cause sunburn and skin cancer.
What are the similar properties of X-rays and Gamma rays?
Short wavelength.
Carry more energy than shorter-wavelength waves.
How are X-rays produced?
In an X-ray tube where fast fast-moving electrons hit a target.
How are gamma rays produced?
When an unstable nucleus releases energy.
What are the uses of X-rays?
Medical Imaging by visualizing broken bones because X-rays are absorbed by bones.
Used in medical treatments.
Uses of Gamma Rays
Medical imaging to detect cancer.
Used in medical treatments such as cancer treatment.
What is ionization?
When X-rays and gamma rays pass through a substance and knock electrons out of atoms, resulting in the atoms becoming charged due to the loss of electrons.
What is a film badge used for
to show that a person has been overexposed to radiation. In case of overexposure, the wearer cannot continue to work for a period of time.
