Chapter 3 - Periodic Table Flashcards
What elements are in group 1?
Alkali Metals
What are the properties of alkali metals
Very reactive
soft
low density
reactivity increases as you go down the group
always form ionic compounds with a +1 charge
Why does the reactivity increase as you go down the group?
In group 1, the further down the group an element is, the more reactive it becomes because the outer electron is further from the nucleus as the atoms get larger. Therefore, the outer electron is less attracted to the nucleus and can more easily be lost.
What are the elements between groups 2 and 3 called?
Transition metals
What are the properties of transition metals?
Good conductors of electricity
Hard and string
High density
High melting/boiling point
Less reactive compared to alkali metals
Corrode slowly
How can transition metals be useful?
Acts as catalysts in the chemical industry
What are the elements in group 7 called?
Halogens
