Physics Flashcards
What is energy?
the ability to do work
What is energy measured in?
Joule
What is thermal energy?
The energy that comes from the temperature of the heated substance
What is a conductor and give an example?
A conductor is any piece of material that easily allows heat or electricity to pass through it. Copper Metal Silver Aluminium
What is an insulator and give an example.
a substance which does not readily allow the passage of heat or sound. plastics Styrofoam paper rubber glass
What is a temperature gradient?
physical quantity that describes in which direction and at what rate the temperature changes
What is thermal equilibrium?
where two objects or an object and it’s surroundings achieve the same level of heat energy
What is the difference between conduction and convection?
In conduction, the heat transfer takes place between objects by direct contact. In convection, the heat transfer takes within the fluid.
What is absolute zero?
the lowest temperature that is theoretically possible, −273.15°C.
What are some forms of electromagnetic radiation?
Radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.
