Physics 8.1 Flashcards
what is thermal equilibrium?
What store does all matter have? ( describe it )
Internal store/energy. The energy in the internal store of a substance is = to the sum of all potential energy due to intermolecular forces and all kinetic energy due to motion of particles.
Desc. process of energy transfer
Energy is transferred from a region of higher temp. to region of lower temp. until both regions have the same temperature reaching Thermal equilibrium.
Define Thermal equilibrium
Thermal equilibrium desc. a state in which 2 or more obj. have the same temp. and that there is no net transfer of energy btwn them.
Format of how to write energy transfer
1) forms a system
2) obj. higher or lower temp then surr. air
3) Diff. in temp. caused energy transfer to be transferred from hotter region to colder region.
4) Temp. of obj. inc/dec until same temp. as surrounding air. Thus, the energy in the internal store of the obj. inc/dec
5) The temp. of obj. dec/inc until it was the same temp. as the surrounding air. Therefore, reaching thermal equilibrium.
