Physics 4 - Energy Resources and Energy Transfers Flashcards
4.11 Write down the relationship between work done, force and distance moved in the direction of the force
Work done = force x distance in the direction of the force
W = F x D
4.12 How is work done and energy transferred related
Work done = energy transferred
4.13 Write down the relationship between gravitational potential energy, mass, gravitational field strength and height
GPE = mass x gravitational potential field strength x height GPE = mgh
4.14 Write down the relationship between kinetic energy, mass and speed
KE = 1/2 x mass x speed squared KE = 1/2mv^2
4.15 Write down the relationship between gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy of an object when it is dropped or thrown in the air
Change in GPE = Change in KE
4.16 Define power
Rate of the transfer of energy or the rate of doing work,
4.17 Write down the relationship between power, work done (energy transferred) and time taken
Power = work done/time taken
P=W/t
4.19P What factors to consider about fuel types?
Reliable, Flexible, Environmental Issues, Location, Fuel Cost
Wind
The wind turns a turbine
Water - tidal barrage
Water trapped during high tide, then released during low tide to turn a turbine
Water - hydroelectricity
Water is collected in dams then released to turn turbines
Water - pumped storage
When there is excess electricity, pump water up into a tall hill.
When electricity is needed, release the water to turn a turbine and generate electricity.
Wave power
The up and down movement of waves pushes and pulls air through a generator
Solar Heating systems
Black pipes full of fluid are heated by the sun and transfer this heat to people’s water
