Physics Flashcards
Wavelength
Distance between two points that are in phase: example crest to crest
Amplitude
The maximum displacement of a wave from its rest position
Frequency
The number of complete wave cycles that pass a given point per second (one HZ equals one cycle per second)
What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength
When the frequency decreases, the wavelength increases, vice versa
Different types of electromagnetic radiation in order from smallest to largest wavelength and the uses for each type
Gamma rays, cancer treatment
, x-rays, medical imaging,
ultraviolet, sterilization,
visible light photography,
infrared, thermal imaging
, microwaves, cooking
radio waves broadcasting
What is the difference between opaque, transparent and translucent?
Opaque - no light transmission, no visibility (wood/metal)
Transparent - complete light transmission, clear visibility, glass/water
Translucent - partial light transmission, blurred visibility, frosted glass
What is the index of refraction referred to?
The ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum or air ( C = 3 x 10^8 m/s)
