Physics Flashcards
I added a couple extra cards for clarity's sake, don't be alarmed
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
What is Newton’s 1st law of motion?
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
What is Newton’s 2nd law of motion?
F = ma
(force = mass * acceleration)
What is Kepler’s 1st law of planetary motion?
Each planet orbits the sun in an ellipse.
What is Newton’s 3rd law of motion?
For every action force there is an equal, opposite reaction force.
What is the difference between truth and scientific facts, and why is it important?
Truth can be revealed to us through special revelation or observation, and scientific facts are made by experimentation and data.
Truth cannot change, but scientific facts can change with new data.
It is important to know the difference because many people will confuse the two.
What were Galileo’s contributions to science?
He developed the telescope, discovered Jupiter’s moons, provided evidence for the heliocentric model, formulated the principle of inertia, and he studied motion.
List the 8 steps in the Scientific Method
- State the Problem
- Research the Problem
- Form a Hypothesis
- Conduct an Experiment
- Collect Data
- Analyze The Data
- Form a conclusion
- Repeat the work
What is the difference between accuracy and precision?
Accuracy is how close to the true value a measurement is.
Precision is the degree of detail or “fine-ness” with which a measurement is recorded, how consistent the measurements are when several are taken.
What is the difference between Matter, Inertia, and Mass?
Matter is anything that is made of atoms and has mass.
Inertia is what we call the fact that objects resist changes in their state of motion. They don’t want to move. This force is only on earth.
Mass is the quantity of matter
What is the difference between Theories and Hypotheses?
Theories = mental models of the world, based off of scientific facts. Theories must account for and explain all facts that relate to them, well-supported.
Hypotheses = based on theories, informed predictions of what will happen in a given circumstance, less supported that theories, needs tested.
