Physics Flashcards
Energy
Is the ability to do work
Joule (J)
Unit of energy
Active energy
A form of energy that causes the movement of either objects particles or waves
Potential energy
A form of stored energy that can be turned into active energy
Gravitational potential energy
The energy stored in objects that are high up
Chemical potential energy
Energy stored in chemical bonds
Elastic potential energy
Energy stored in stretched elastic substances
Kinetic energy
Energy in moving objects
Light energy
Energy of visible light waves
Heat energy
Energy produced by the friction of moving particles
Energy transformation
Changes that occur when an object works to change one energy form to another
Input energy
The energy that goes into a transformation or transfer
Output energy
The energy that comes out of a transformation or transfer
Useful energy
The output energy that is used for the main purpose of the object
Waste energy
The output energy that is not useful in making the device work
Law of energy conservation
Energy can not be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred or transformed from one form to another. Input energy = output energy
Energy efficiency
No energy transformation is 100% efficient. Energy efficiency is how much of the input energy is transformed into to useful form in a percentage
Amplitude
The maximum height of the wave measured from the equilibrium position
Crest
A point above a surface wave where displacement of the medium is at a maximum
Trough
A point below a surface wave where displacement of the medium is at a maximum
Equilibrium
A point on a surface wave with the displacement of the median is at a minimum
Sound
A type of energy you can hear that travels as a longitudinal wave
Light
A type of energy you can see that travels as a transverse wave
Incidence ray
An incoming ray of light
