Physics Flashcards
Learn: electricity and magnetism, energy and motion and pressure
What is meant by potential difference?
The push that makes a charge move around a
circuit
What is speed?
How far something has travelled in a particular time.
What is the overall charge of an atom?
Neutral
Fill in the blank:
Electrons give a ________charge
Negative
What units are moments measured in?
Nm
State 2 ways you can increase gas
pressure.
Increase the temperature. Decrease the volume of the container
Explain how convection works
Particles get heated and spread out. They become less dense and rise. When they rise they lose heat to the surroundings and cool. They then become dense and sink. This process is a convection current.
What is speed usually measured in?
Metres per second or cm per second.
What are the 7 main stores of energy
0-1 for 1, 2 for 2, 3-4 for 3, 5-6 for 4, 7 out of 7 for 5 confidence.
Magnetic.
Thermal
Chemical.
Kinetic.
Electrostatic.
Elastic potential.
Gravitational potential.
Nuclear.
What are the 3 subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
What does it mean for a gas to be
compressed?
Squashing the particles into a smaller space
How is energy transferred in a light bulb?
Electricity → Light and Heat
What do you measure energy in?
Joules/ kilojoules
Can you compress a liquid?
No. 😃
What happens when particles heat up?
As particles heat up they gain kinetic energy and vibrate or move faster
Fill in the blank:
Protons give a ________ charge
Positive
What do you need to make an electromagnet?
A strong, electrical magnet
What is the symbol for resistance
Ω
(ohms)
What happens to the atmospheric
pressure if you go higher up? Why?
It decreases. Gravity pulls the particles down.
What is a kilo-Joule?
A thousand Joules
What unit is potential difference measured in?
Volts
What materials are good at convection?
Fluids (gases and liquids)
What happens to the current in a parallel circuit?
It splits up at the junction
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
That energy is neither created nor destroyed. Only transferred.
Radiation uses ________ to transfer heat.
Waves
What equation can be used to calculate
resistance?
Resistance = Potential difference ÷Current
State 3 examples of circuit components
Bulb, buzzer, motor, resistor, IC, LED, Diode, Switch,
Accept any 3 from the list above ^^^
What 4 materials are magnetic?
Iron, steel, cobalt, nickel
What are the 2 types of electrical charge?
Positive and negative
