Physics Flashcards
Average Speed (formula)
total distance / total time
Speed
Speed= Distance/Time (V=S/T)
Distance
Distance=SpeedxTime (S=TxV)
Time taken
Time taken=Distance/Speed (T=S/V)
Scalar
A quantity with magnitude (size) only. Eg. Distance
Vector
A quantity with magnitude
Thinking Distance
The distance a vehicle travels in the time it takes for a driver to react to the situation and apply the breaks. Speed x Reaction Time (S=VxT)
What affects the thinking distance?
Mental Illness, Influences, Distractions, Tiredness, Medical Problems , Visibility Issues
Braking Distance
The distance that is travelled from the moment the breaks are applied until standstill.
What affects the braking distance?
Road Surface, Weight of the car, Traction of the tyres, Speed, Weather conditions, Tyre conditions
Stopping Distance
Thinking Distance + Braking Distance
Examples of Forces
Friction, Weight, Air resistance, Water resistance, Drag, Electrostatic, Upthrust, Tension, Reaction(Contact/Normal), Lift
The 2 types of friction
Static: Hard to get things to move. Dynamic: once it is moving
What affects friction?
Mass: Heaviness can increase friction. Surface: Coarser creates more friction. Contact Area: bigger=more smaller=less
Pivot
Helps something else move (eg. Hinges or Handle), tries to move in a circle
