Physics Flashcards
What is newtons first law of motion
Newton’s first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia, states that an object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at a constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force. EG. A toy car o n a frictionless surface will keep rolling on forever
What is newtons second law of motion
Newton’s second law of motion states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object1. The law can be formally stated as follows: The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object1.
This can be expressed in equation form as follows:
a= Fnet Divided by M
This equation can be reversed to find the other variables
What is newtons 3rd Law of motion
Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means if an object A exerts a force on object B, then object B must exert a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction back on object
How do we draw forces
Force diagrams can be represented using an arrow.
A short arrow shows a weak force and a long arrow shows a strong force. The direction of the arrow shows the direction of the force.
You can add forces together.
Normal force (ground pushing up)
In other examples - applied force (you)
What Is a non Contact force
A Non-Contact force are forces that interact with objects without them ever directly touching. They can be imagined as a field where that force affects objects. An example of a non-contact force is a magnet. It inetracts with objects in its field by pulling or repelling them
What is friction
Friction is a force that acts against on object sliding on another one. It is the reason things don’t slide forever. It is a contact force.
What is gravity
Gravity is a fundamental force. It attracts objects towards the center of another object. The strength of gravity is dependent on the mass of an object. Gravity is a non-contact force
What is force measured in
Newtons
how can forces affect objects
forces can start motion, Stop Motion, Speed up or Slow down motion, change the direction of motion, change the shape of an object or have no visible affect
what can magnets do
Magnets magnets can attract some substances including Iron, through a non contact force. Magnets have a south and north pole. Magnets are surrounded by a magnetic field, which can attract certain objects within its radius.
what is an electromagnet
An electromagnet is a coil of wire around an Iron core. When an electric current is passed through the coil, the iron is magnetised
