Q

What is an independent variable

A

An independent variable is a variable whose variation does not depend on that of another. In a scientific experiment, it is the factor that you intentionally change or control in order to see what effect it has2. The variable that responds to the change in the independent variable is called the dependent variable2.

For example, if a scientist is testing the effect of light and dark on the behavior of moths by turning a light on and off, the independent variable is the amount of light and the moth’s reaction is the dependent variable2.

In the context of mathematics, an independent variable is a variable that is independent of the other variables in an expression or function and whose value determines one or more of the values of the other variables3.

Q

what is a dependent variable

A

A dependent variable is the variable that is being measured or tested in an experiment. Its value depends on changes in the independent variable. For example, in a study looking at how tutoring impacts test scores, the dependent variable would be the participants’ test scores, since that is what is being measured.
