Physics Flashcards
Energy =
The ability to do work (J or KJ)
Kinetic energy =
Is the energy an object has due to its motion (J)
Thermal energy =
Is the total kinetic energy of all of the atoms that make up
an object or system.
Temperature =
Is the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up
an object or system.
Heat =
Is the thermal energy that is transferred between objects or systems due to a temperature difference.
Thermodynamics =
Is the branch of physics that studies the effects of heat,
energy and work on a system.
first law of thermodynamics =
States that thermal energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed into other forms of energy or
transferred to other objects.
Thermal equilibrium =
Describes two bodies that have the same temperature
and therefore no net thermal energy transfer.
Velocity =
How fast an object travels in a certain distance
Speed =
How fast an object travels in a certain period of time
Distance =
How far an object travels
Displacement =
Distance between an objects start and end points
Acceleration =
Is the rate (time) of change of speed.
