physics Flashcards
Newton
Unit of Force
Odometer
A meter which measures distance travelled
Pascal
Unit for Pressure
Physics
The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy
Potential Energy
Energy stored in an object
Power
The amount of work being done in a specific time; how fast work occurs
Pressure
The amount of force being applied over a certain area
S.I unit
The systeme international
the standard units of measurement used for each physics measurement
Support Force
The force which holds up an object against the force of gravity
Technology
Peoples use of science to make their lives easier
Ticker Timer
A device which uses a paper strip and a tapping arm to time movement
Unbalanced Force
When 2 opposing forces are not equal, movement is in the direction of the net force
Velocity
Speed in a named direction
Watt
The unit for power
Weight Force
The force of gravity acting upon a mass
Work
What is done when a force moves an object over a distance
Balanced Forces
When 2 opposing forces are equal; net force = on
Calibrations
The marks or spaces that create an even scale for measurement
Distance
How far apart 2 points are; length, width, height, breadth
Extrapolate
To look beyond the end of a line graph to predict data
Force
Something which makes an object speed up, slow down, stop, change direction or change its shape
Force Meter
Also called a Newton meter, measures force
Friction
The force created when surfaces or molecules rub together
Inertia
The resistance of an object to be moved once at rest
Interpolate
To look between the data points in a line graph to figure out data points
Joules
The unit of energy
Kinetic Energy
The energy found in all moving objects
Line Graph
Most common graph used in physics, data is to be plotted using small crosses, then either joined or a line of best fit is drawn
Line of best fit (LOBF)
A line which is drawn to show the trend of data, it does not go through each data point
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, measured in kgs
Momentum
The measure of the mass in an object times (x) its velocity, objects in motion tend to stay in motion
Motion
The act of moving
