Q

What is an asteroid?

A

Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Although asteroids orbit the Sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets.

Q

What is specular reflection?

A

Specular reflection is a type of surface reflectance often described as a mirror-like reflection of light from the surface. In specular reflection, the incident light is reflected into a single outgoing direction.

Q

What is diffuse reflection?

A

Diffuse reflection is the reflection of light from a surface such that an incident ray is reflected at many angles, rather than at just one angle as in the case of specular reflection. Normally on a non-flat surface.

Q

What is the difference between transparent, translucent, luminous and opaque

A

Transparent allows all light to pass through. Translucent allows some light to pass through. Opaque doesn’t allow light to travel through. Luminous gives off light / bright.

Q

What is a star?

A

A star is a luminous ball of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, held together by its own gravity. Nuclear fusion reactions in its core support the star against gravity and produce photons and heat, as well as small amounts of heavier elements.

Q

Explain what happens when light hits a prism

A

As light passes through a prism, it is bent, or refracted, by the angles and plane faces of the prism and each wavelength of light is refracted by a slightly different amount. Violet has the highest frequency and is refracted the most. Red has the lowest frequency and is refracted the least.

17
Q

What is meant by frequency, amplitude and wavelength?

A

Amplitude is the distance between the resting position and the maximum displacement of the wave. Frequency is the number of waves passing by a specific point per second. Wavelength is the distance from one crest or trough to another.

18
Q

How does conduction, convection and radiation all transfer energy?

A

While conduction is the transfer of heat energy by direct contact, convection is the movement of heat by actual motion of matter; radiation is the transfer of energy with the help of electromagnetic waves.

19
Q

How do you calculate speed

A

Speed = distance / time

20
Q

How do you calculate work done?

A

Work done (J) = force (N) x distance moved in the direction of force (m)

21
Q

Diesel fuel is a store of what type of energy?

A

Chemical energy store

22
Q

What are examples of things that store energy in chemicals?

A

Batteries, Biomass, Petroleum, Coal, Natural gas

23
Q

How do you calculate the moment?

A

Moment = force x perpendicular distance from the pivot

24
Q

What are the 7 stores of energy?

A

Kinetic, Gravitational potential, Chemical, Elastic potential, Magnetic, Electrostatic and thermal energy

25
Q

What are ways energy can be transferred?

A

Mechanically, Heating, Electrically and light and sound

26
