Balance
To maintain the body in perfect equilibrium through effective awareness of muscular activity. A body that is in control of gravity.
Flexibility
The range of joint mobility and muscular looseness involving the whole body and not just the legs.
Alignment
The weight safely centered over a base of support in order to maintain balance.
Control
The ability to manage a variety of movement categories with concentrated awareness of muscular activity in order to retain personal equilibrium.
Coordination
The correct relationship of muscular activity within the whole body needed to produce effective, harmonious and balanced movement actions.
Transference of Weight
The weight change that occurs when the dancer moves from balance on two feet to one foot, from one foot to two feet, from one foot to the other foot.
Stamina
The staying power a dancer must have to effectively dance a whole dance class or dance performance. This is sometimes referred to as ‘fitness’. Aerobic activity within dance training is necessary to gain this endurance quality.
Strength
The quality of being able to withstand force or pressure
