Physical Science Test 13 Study Guide Flashcards
What is The Actual Mechanical Advantage? (AMA)
The AMA measures the mechanical advantage taking into account all mechanical losses sustained throughout the machine. It is the ratio of the output force to the input force
What is Efficiency?
Efficiency is the effectiveness of a machine or process at converting energy from one form to another.
What is Power?
Power is the rate of doing work. The SI unit of power is the watt (W), named for Scottish inventory James Watt.
What is Torque
A Torque is any force that tries to cause an object to rotate around its axis.
What is a Gear?
A Gear is a common variation of the wheel and axle, is a simple machine that consists of a wheel with teeth around its perimeter that mesh with teeth on other gears to do work.
What is the inclined plane?
The Inclined Plane is a simple machine consisting of a flat surface whose opposite ends are at different heights.
What is the lever?
A lever is a simple machine that consists of a rigid bar that turns about a pivot point.
What is a pulley?
The Pulley is a simple machine that consists of a wheel and axle system with a groove around the perimeter of the wheel in which a rope, cable, or belt moves with the wheel as it rotates.
What is a Screw?
The Screw is an inclined plane that is wrapped around a cone or a cylinder in a spiral pattern. (It is a simple machine)
What is a simple machine?
A simple machine is a basic mechanical device that changes the magnitude, direction, or distance traveled of the force used when doing work
What is a compound machine?
Is a machine that uses two or more simple machines. (Ex. Bike)
What is The Ideal Mechanical Advantage? (IMA)
IMA is the measure of mechanical advantage for an ideal machine.
(IMA= d-in / d-out)
