Physical Science Study Guide Unit 14-15 Flashcards
Define Energy
It is the ability to Do Work
Define Kinetic Energy
It is Energy that an object possesses due to its motion
Define Thermal Energy
It is The sum of Kinetic energies of all the particles within an object
Define Absolute Zero
It is The coldest temp possible (not achievable)
Define Heat
It is the movement of thermal energy from one area of higher temp to one of lower temp
Define Conduction
It is the movement of electric charge or thermal energy through an object or from object to object through direct contact
Define Convection
It is the movement of thermal energy as fluids move
Define Insulation
Insulation is the process of keeping heat, sound, or electricity from spreading
Define Temperature
It is the measure of the hotness or coldness of a substance; it is proportional to the average Kinetic Energy of the particles within the substance
Define Radiation
It is the Movement of energy in the form of electromagnetic waves
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
It states that energy can nit be created or destroyed but only transferred between objects or transformed into different forms of energy
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
It states that energy can flow from a colder object to a warmer object only if something does work
What is the third law of thermodynamics?
It states that it is impossible to reach Absolute Zero
What is conservation of energy
energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another
What is Mechanical Energy
the energy an object has due to its position or motion
Thermal insulators
They are things that keep heat inside and keep them inside
Specific heat
The energy required to raise the temp of I g of a substance 1 C°
What can energy be exchanged for
Energy can be exchanged for motion, sound, heat, or light.
What are the non renewable energy resources
They are oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, biofuels, hydro, and others
What are some advantages of renewable energy sources
They are renewable, they can be used again, we have a lot of them.
Benefits and drawbacks of fossil fuels
The benefits are that it is a great source of energy for many things, the bad is that it’s very dangerous getting some of it
