Physical Science: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 Flashcards
Properties of Matter.
Texture, shape, size, color, ect.
Three principle states of matter.
Solids, liquids, gas
Characteristic Properties of Matter.
Properties that hold true for a particular kind of matter regardless of what sample is used: (I.e.: all diamonds have the same hardness no matter what the size, boiling point, melting point, ect.)
Boiling point.
Temperature at which a liquid boils.
Melting point.
Temperature at which a solid melts.
Physical changes in Matter.
Changes that alter the form of a substance, but not its identity.
Chemical changes in Matter
Changes in which substances combine or break apart to form new substances.
What is matter classified as?
Pure substances or mixtures.
What does mixtures include?
Solutions.
What does pure substances include?
Elements and compounds.
Mixtures.
Consists of two or more substances that are in the same place but are not chemically combined. Individual substances keep their separate properties.
Solutions.
A mixture where all the parts are extremely well blended so it appears to be one substance.
Pure Substances.
Made of one kind of matter and has definite properties.
Elements.
Pure substances that can’t be broken down into other substances by any physical or chemical means.
Compounds.
A substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined.Properties of the compound is different from the properties of the elements that form them.
