Conservation authority
An organization that manages the lands around a river system
Region
A part of the earth’s surface that has similar characteristics throughout its extent
Watershed
An area drained by the waters of a river system
Transition zone
An area though which one physical region gradually gives way to another
Broadleaf forest
A forest of trees that lose their leaves as winter approaches
Coniferous forest
Forest of trees with needles and that drop their seeds in cones
Tundra
A region of low shrubs and other hardy plants suited to short summers and extreme winer cold
Eco zone
A region identified by several factors, including landforms, climate, soil and natural vegetation
Formal region
An area with at least one characteristic that is common throughout the area
Functional region
An area identified by what occurs within it
Urbanization
A population shift from the countryside to the cities
Metropolitan area
A city and the urban areas surrounding it
Urban sprawl
The irregular growth of a town or city over a large area
